10/30/2022 | The Blue Angel (new!)

Theaterhaus, Stuttgart, Germany

Film and book in comparison, how does Heinrich Mann’s novel Professor Unrat or The End of a Tyrant, a bitter satire about the German bourgeoisie at the turn of the century and its film adaptation, differ?

The focus of the joint event organized by the German Literature Archive in Marbach and the Spoken Arts Festival is the comparison between Heinrich Mann’s novel and the film by Josef von Sternberg. In the film, Rath violates the rules of society and ultimately breaks under the circumstances. In the novel he runs into self-inflicted misfortune: all his life he had submitted to bourgeois values and acted out his aggression towards his students, now after his dismissal from school he attacks the bourgeois order and celebrates wild parties. The pillars of society gather at his house to gamble and forget their bourgeois manners. Rath enjoys the chaos he’s created. Is this anarchistic tendency of the novel missing in the film? Does the film show the fate of an individual and does without the social satire of the original? What is the difference between book and film and what do these differences do?

The songs from the movie “The Blue Angel” are sung by the great artist Adrienne Haan, accompanied by her long-time accompanist and partner on the piano, Benjamin Schaefer.

05/21/2024 | Between Fire&Ice – A Weimar Berlin Cabaret

The Triad Theater NYC in collaboration with Carnegie Hall

As part of Carnegie Hall’s festival “The Rise and Fall of Weimar”

With MD Richard Danley on the piano

On November 9, 1918, the German Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann proclaims the collapse of the German Empire from a balcony of the Reichstag building, declaring the first German Republic. The Weimar Constitution is signed on August 11, 1919 and promulgated on August 14.

It’s a time of change. A time of challenge. A time of experiments. A time when traditions are going down the drain. The Great World War is lost, the Kaiser in exile. Germany experiments with a new form of government: The Weimar Republic is born and with it a nation longing for latitude.

Chanteuse Internationale Adrienne Haan, artist-in-residence at the Triad Theater NYC, explores the musical cabaret repertoire of that time with her virtuoso voice and great acting skills. Berlin; yes, that’s the wild, wicked, feverishly crazy metropolis of the short-lived republic between the two world wars (1919-1933). Its appeal is unique to this day, flaring up again and again in unbroken fascination. Dietrich, Hollaender, Tucholsky, Spoliansky, Weill and Brecht, Eisler, they all come alive again. Accompanied by her Music Director of 22 years, Richard Danley on the grand piano, she re-lives the bodacious epoch of the Roaring 20s. Berlin’s nightlife become vivid again. The ravishing songs, couplets and chansons are the liveliest testimony of this time: They capture everything – the passion and the melancholy, the addiction to life and lust, all the diabolically erotic stuff including the uncertainty of which gender belongs where until the rise of the Nazis in 1933 will close the curtain on Berlin’s “Golden Age” forever.

Today, this soiree is an important warning that almost 100 years after the fall of the Weimar Republic, the world is once again facing the threats of the past.

The artist weaves the threads between feminist struggle and female glamor and takes the audience on an exciting musical journey through history.

This soirée is moderated and sung in English. To show the authenticity of the songs, the artist presents some of the original German lyrics in various places.

Approx Running Time: 85 minutes with no intermission.

Please Note: the venue has a 2-beverage minimum per person.

01/16/2025 | Lecture on Degenerate Music

The Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre, Cape Town, South Africa

Entartete Musik

English: Degenerate Music

…the sound the “Führer” did not want to listen to…

A lecture by Adrienne Haan

Under the patronage of the German Consul General in Cape Town
Presented by the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre

Degenerate Music (German: Entartete Musik) was a label applied in the 1930s by the Nazi government in Germany to certain forms of music that it considered to be harmful or decadent. The Nazi government’s concern for Degenerate Music was a part of its larger and more well-known campaign against Degenerate Art (‘Entartete Kunst’). In both cases, the government attempted to isolate, discredit, discourage, or ban the works.

In her historical lecture, Ms. Haan highlights many aspects of German history and goes as far back as the year 1914, the beginning of World War I (1914-18), focusing on the the Primal Catastrophe (German: Urkatastrophe) of the 20th Century that would later on lead to the Third Reich.

She elaborates the politics of the last German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the connection between Germany and the Great Powers at that time. Many facets of the Great War are shown and she then continues to take the audience straight into the Weimar Republic (1918-1933), again focusing on its politics, but also focusing on its artist and the rise of European Cabaret.

She then illustrates the life and works of some of the most famous musicians of the time before she progressively finds the passage to the rising Nazi Regime, its politics and therefore the end of the pluralism of the Weimar Republic.

The Great Depression of 1929, the forbidden Jazz and Swing music under the Naziz as well as the persecution and execution of the so-called German “Swing-Youth” which originated in Hamburg, Germany are also important topic of this lecture.

During the lecture, Ms. Haan contrasts the music that was allowed in the Third Reich (1933-1945), and the music that was considered degenerate.

Approx. running time including Q&A: 1 hour

In her lecture, Adrienne Haan goes into detail about the origins of this catastrophe, featuring certain artists. There will be a powerpoint presentation with music toward the end of the lecture, a Q&A session as well as a reception.

The lecture begins at 6 pm and is FREE of charge.

01/26/2025 | Tehorah (טהורה)

The South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town, South Africa

A peace concert for the 85th commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau and the end of the Holocaust.

Under patronage of the German Consul General in Cape Town.

In collaboration with the South African Jewish Museum, the Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre, the Cape Town Concert Series and Fine Music Radio.

Tehorah which means “pure” in Hebrew, is a heartbreaking, promising musical journey about loss, hope, love and forgiveness.

First performed at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall in 2015 with a follow up performance in the same venue in 2023 under patronage of the German and Israeli Ambassadors to the United Nations in New York, Adrienne Haan has performed Tehorah all around the world. Some prestigious venues and festival include: Ravina in Chicago, the Teatr Novi in Łódź, the Jewish Festival in Warsaw, the White Synagogue in Wrocław, and the philharmonic orchestra in Łomża, Poland.

On January 27th, 2020 Adrienne performed this concert in collaboration with MemoShoah Luxembourg and the “International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance” at the theater in Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg. In Germany, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and the Württemberg Philharmonics featured Tehorah during “1700 Years of Jewish Life in German Speaking Lands” in 2021. There it was also featured at the Jewish Culture Days in Berlin and the Achava Jewish Festival in Weimar.

In 2021 Tehorah was performed in Toronto, Canada during  “Liberation 75” and with the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Asunción, Paraguay.

Written, directed and performed by Chanteuse Internationale Adrienne Haan, the soirée contains German, Yiddish and Hebrew songs that were composed and written exclusively by Jewish composers and librettists. Tehorah is a historical-poetic portrait that commences in the lascivious post World War I night clubs of 1920s Weimar Berlin, the birthplace of cabaret, before the Nazis marched in and closed the curtain of Berlin’s Golden Age forever. The journey continues to the ghetto of Litzmannstadt (Łódź) with heart-wrenching songs in Yiddish all the way to the Promised Land with some of the most beautiful oeuvres ever written in Hebrew.

“Tehorah is a tour-de-force and one of the most important soirées in today’s world!” (The New York Concert Review)

“Haan is possessing of one of the most palatable voices on the scene, immersing herself into the storytelling, committing herself to character choices that would hurt the vocal instruments of less experienced performers, then turning on a dime with what can only be described as full opera, at times shocking a person with the beauty and the power of her unblemished mezzo.” (Broadway World)

“Her vocal power and emotional expressions are second to none!” (The Huffington Post)

“Tehorah is a captivating and impressive musical journey, a frighting reminder that history repeats itself!” (The Times Square Chronicles)

03/18/2025 | Margo – A Woman in Berlin (new show!)

Théâtre National du Luxembourg

A new Soirée Noir written by and starring Adrienne Haan

Under the patronage of the German Embassy in Luxembourg

Who is Margo?

– Margo, that is the synonym for women in Berlin in the Roaring 1920s and early 30s; Margo is a vamp at the TingelTangel; she is the woman behind the mask. She is also the sophisticated seduction and temptation of those men who rule the world. But Margo is also the delicate, insecure girl whose husband returns severely physically wounded and shell shocked from the “Great War”. She is a lesbian who – at the prestigious Eldorado – is searching for true love and the pleasures for one night. Margo is also the simple woman next door who fights for her rights, a suffragette fighting for Women’s Rights or and the right to abort.

Chanteuse Internationale Adrienne Haan, who has lived in New York since 1997, vividly explores the musical cabaret repertoire of that era emphasized by her virtuoso voice and great acting skills. She portrays Margo in this excitingly erotic and political soirée noir; the different types of women in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, tells their stories about their failures and successes, their desire for (sexual) freedom and the longing for acceptance in politics and society. Margo is a story of love, loss and disappointment, a dance on the volcano between the two world wars.

Berlin; yes, that is the wild, wicked, feverishly crazy metropolis of the short-lived Weimar Republic, whose appeal continues to radiate fascination to this day. Dietrich, Hollaender, Tucholsky, Spoliansky, Weill and Brecht, Eisler, they all flare up again when Adrienne Haan leads the audience through a musical journey of Berlin’s Roaring 20s, accompanied by jazz virtuoso and multiple jazz prize winner Benjamin Schaefer on the piano.

The artist weaves the threads between feminist struggle and female glamor and takes the audience on an exciting musical journey through history.

This soirée is also an important warning that almost 100 years after the fall of the Weimar Republic, the world is once again facing similar threats today.
